These are some helpful idea’s.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

First get the acorns from where you can find them outside or in a garden centre , then wrap them in a tea towel or handkerchief and let them soak in water for a minimum of 48 hours before planting them in the forest garden or anywhere outside.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We can plant acorns in the UK in the autumn, from around October to November, after they have ripened on the tree and had a chance to fall, when the leaves of the tree go brown.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Collecting acorns in autumn ensures they are mature and gives them the necessary cool, moist conditions over the winter to germinate in the spring.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Steps to Planting Acorns:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Collect acorns in autumn i.e. now:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Look for acorns from oak trees in the UK during the October to November time and choose ones with brown skin that have fallen from the tree.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Test for viability: Place the collected acorns in a bucket of water; those that sink are healthy and good for planting.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prepare the planting pot:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fill a pot with a standard potting mix, ensuring there is a layer of compost on top.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In countryside just take a stick and plant in at say 1.5 inches not to deep.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sowing the acorn:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Push the acorn into the soil with your finger.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Cover the acorn with a thin layer of soil, water the pot, or place to protect it from predators, such as mice and squirrels !<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Overwinter and wait for spring: If they are in a pot they should be by a sheltered spot over the winter months. Roots will grow, and shoots will emerge in late April or early spring.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We have just planted approximately one hundred acorns at Camelot Castle ! , you can see some of the pots here in the photographs.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

You can get your family, friend, or friends to meet you and go out together and plant, its fun !<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
