SOMETIMES ONE MEETING CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE<\/span><\/p>\n

People sometimes ask me how I ended up doing what I do today.<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is surprisingly simple.<\/span><\/p>\n

I met a friend in a coffee shop, we had a conversation, and that conversation changed the direction of my life.<\/span><\/p>\n

It made me realise something important. Sometimes all it takes is meeting the right person at the right time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of us go through periods when life feels a bit repetitive. We get up, go to work, look after the family, pay the bills and do it all again the next day.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing wrong with any of that. But occasionally we find ourselves wondering whether there\u2019s something more we could be doing with our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe everyone has what I call a Primary Purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s simply the thing that gives your life meaning. The thing you really care about. The reason you get out of bed in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

For one person it might be creating beautiful things. For another, helping people. For someone else, building a business, raising a family or making the world a little better.<\/span><\/p>\n

And sometimes we don\u2019t discover that purpose on our own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes a friend helps us see it.<\/span><\/p>\n

You might meet a friend in a coffee shop, at work or completely by chance.<\/span><\/p>\n

You start talking and suddenly something clicks.<\/span><\/p>\n

You feel interested, excited or inspired in a way you haven\u2019t felt for ages.<\/span><\/p>\n

That friend hasn\u2019t necessarily given you anything. They may simply have reminded you of something that was already inside you.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that can make all the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n

But here\u2019s something else I\u2019ve noticed.<\/span><\/p>\n

We often lose touch with the very people who have helped us most.<\/span><\/p>\n

Life gets busy. Weeks turn into months. Before long, that wonderful conversation becomes a distant memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that\u2019s a shame.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a friend has encouraged you, inspired you or helped you find your feet, why not keep in touch?<\/span><\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t have to be anything complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n

A quick phone call. A postcard. A friendly email. Even a simple message saying, \u201cI was thinking of you today. Hope you\u2019re well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Friendships are a bit like plants. Give them a little attention now and again and they tend to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s another part to this idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe we all have a main purpose in life, but we also have lots of smaller purposes that help us achieve it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I call these Sub Purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, you might feel that your Primary Purpose is to bring happiness to other people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your smaller purposes could be being a good parent, helping a neighbour, creating something beautiful, doing your job well or simply making someone smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re all different ways of working towards the same thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

And you don\u2019t have to change your whole life to get started.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imagine someone who works in an office and has become rather bored with life.<\/span><\/p>\n

One day he meets a woman who paints watercolours. They have a chat, and she encourages him to try painting.<\/span><\/p>\n

He gives it a go.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before long he\u2019s painting at weekends, visiting galleries and discovering a whole new side of himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

His job hasn\u2019t changed. His circumstances haven\u2019t changed very much.<\/span><\/p>\n

But his life has.<\/span><\/p>\n

Or imagine a woman who\u2019s spent years working in accounts. She\u2019s good at her job but feels something is missing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then she meets someone who\u2019s helping small businesses get started.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their conversation reminds her how much she enjoys helping people succeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

She begins mentoring younger colleagues and eventually finds herself doing work she genuinely loves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, it all began with a conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, not every person we meet is going to change our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

But every now and then a friend comes along who helps us see things differently.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I think those people are worth appreciating.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been fortunate enough to have friends like that in my own life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some have become lifelong friends. Others I\u2019ve only known briefly.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I\u2019m grateful to them all.<\/span><\/p>\n

So perhaps it\u2019s worth asking yourself a couple of simple questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is it that really makes you happy and gives your life meaning?<\/span><\/p>\n

And who are the friends who\u2019ve helped you discover it?<\/span><\/p>\n

If someone comes to mind, perhaps today would be a good day to get in touch.<\/span><\/p>\n

You never know what might come from it.<\/span><\/p>\n

After all, a simple conversation with a friend in a coffee shop changed my life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps one could change yours.<\/span><\/p>\n
