As we know when we plant acorns, we help bring new life into the world.
You also might like to make a wish when you plant each one and see what happens .
These may be some helpful ideas.
First get the acorns from where you can find them outside by hedge rows, by oak trees, in the forests or a garden centre .
Wrap the acorns in a tea towel or handkerchief and let them soak in water for a minimum of 48 hours before planting them in the forest your garden or anywhere outside where you are able.
We can plant acorns in the UK in the autumn, from around September / October time after they have ripened on the tree and had a chance to fall when the leaves of the tree go brown.
Collecting acorns in autumn ensures they are mature and gives them the necessary cool, moist conditions over the winter to germinate in the spring.
Steps to Planting Acorns:
Collect acorns in autumn i.e. now:
Look for acorns from oak trees in the UK during the September / October time and choose ones with brown skin that have fallen from the tree.
Test for viability: Place the collected acorns in a bucket of water; those that sink are healthy and good for planting any ones that float you can discard.
Prepare the planting pot:
Fill a pot with a standard potting mix, ensuring there is a layer of compost on top.
In countryside , just take a stick and plant the acorns in at say 1.5 inches not to deep.
Sowing the acorn:
Push the acorn into the soil with your finger.
Cover the acorn with a thin layer of soil, to protect it from predators, such as mice and squirrels !
Overwinter and wait for spring: If they are in a pot they should be by a sheltered spot over the winter months. Roots will grow, and shoots will emerge in late April or early spring.
